A custom-built enterprise centre for technology companies has been opened at Knockaconny, outside Monaghan town. Companies are moving in to the state-of-the-art M:TEK Building, which has computer floors and access to fibre-optic cables. M:TEK, along with sister building A:TEK in Armagh, is part of the Armagh Monaghan Digital Corridor, a North/South Strategy to provide sustainable IT employment in Armagh and Monaghan.
Epan.com, Ireland's first on-line real-time financial bookmakers, has launched its long-dated share betting markets. There are a total of 650 new long-dated markets, and clients will be able to speculate on the performance of shares up to three months in the future. The long dated markets are updated in real time and the expiry months are March, June, September and December.
Irish security distribution company Espion has announced the availability of CMDS -- centrally managed desktop security -- in Ireland. CMDS offers secure remote access, protection against internal threats, a tool for measuring productivity, intrusion detection monitoring and virus control. Espion has acquired the sole distribution rights in Ireland for CMDS from US security expert Securitae.
British video-games manufacturer Rage Software said it plans to raise up to STG5.6 million (USD8.2 million) by selling new shares, in an effort to stave off insolvency. The Liverpool-based firm said that if the share offering does not succeed, Bank of Scotland may withdraw a STG6.2 million credit line and the company might be forced to call in administrators.
Vivendi Universal may face early demands to repay as much as USD5 billion in debt unless it sells assets, investors said. Moody's Investors Service cut its rating on Vivendi's long-term debt to one notch above junk earlier this month amid concern that the media company may fail to trim its USD30 billion of debt. One more downgrade would allow investors in some of Vivendi's bonds to demand repayment. Vivendi may be forced to sell assets such as shares in water utility Vivendi Environnement.
Owners of the TiVo digital video recorder were surprised by a new sponsorship feature that automatically records programmes, ads and other promotional material. TiVo users found that BBC drama Dossa and Joe was automatically recorded and cannot be deleted from their machines for about a week. This is the first time the box has been used by a broadcaster to record a show regardless of the viewer's wishes. Hundreds of posts about the recording have appeared on the TiVo Community bulletin board, an independent discussion forum.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has filed a copyright lawsuit against file-swapping service Audiogalaxy. The suit charges that Audiogalaxy's attempts to filter access to copyrighted songs have been ineffective. Audiogalaxy started to implement measures to filter access to some copyrighted works in mid-2001 after Napster was ordered to do so by a federal judge. The RIAA has copyright suits pending against Napster, StreamCast Networks and its Morpheus software, Kazaa, Grokster, MP3Board and Madster.
