The Information Router allows mobile users to access information held in corporate networks through any mobile GSM device. According to Xiam, the system will allow remote users to access and respond to e-mails, interact with company databases and download information from company Web sites through mobile text messaging.
Any mobile user can use the solution, but Vodafone will specifically target corporate users in the UK market, said Hew Spiers, chief financial officer at Xiam. For its part, Vodafone has an unparalleled reach into the corporate market, and the Information Router is a new product for Vodafone to offer its customers, he added.
The software provides information alerts to users as well as allowing users to access whatever other information they want, said Spiers.
The deal will see Vodafone offer a basic version of the product to customers for STG10,000 and a premium version for STG35,000, with Xiam keeping most of the revenue generated.
Xiam had already been offering a similar service to Eircell customers and the new deal marks an expansion of the company's product in the UK market. In Ireland, the software is marketed as the Information Manager, but according to Spiers, it is the same product.
The Information Router currently supports SMS, WAP, i-mode and mobile e-mail, and is expected to support EMS, MMS and 3G messaging in the future.
The agreement will provide both companies with new business opportunities in the enterprise market, said Xiam.
In April 2001, Xiam announced that it had secured EUR6.7 million in funding to assist in the company's proposed expansion into Europe.
The company explained at that point that the funding would be used for research into, and development of, its information routing technology.
Xiam develops software solutions with a particular emphasis on wireless Internet technology. The company's headquarters are in Dublin, where it employs about 100 people.
