Greyhound fans go on-line at new site
Monday, December 04 2000
by Mary O'Neill
GlobalGreyhounds has unveiled a new Web site for greyhound racing enthusiasts world-wide.
The site, which can be found at www.globalgreyhounds.com, is a centralised message board system which offers a forum for debate and discussion on the industry and the sport.
The site was co-founded by James Corbett, from Newcastlewest, Co. Limerick and Wendy Hamilton from Michigan, USA. Both are freelance Web site developers with an interest and background in greyhound racing. For the past two years they had their own Yahoo greyhound clubs and had established a strong international network of contacts with other people interested in the area. Although other on-line greyhound publications already exist, this is an interactive, discursive one.
James Corbett told ElectricNews.Net that in the two weeks since the site has been unveiled, there have been six and a half thousand page views per day.
"We haven't even begun advertising yet and we already have 270 members. We have attracted interest all over the world, our busiest forum is Australia, and it's really taking off in Finland," said Corbett.
He went to explain that the plan is to advertise the site in greyhound newspapers, and to encourage bookmakers to put banner ads on the site. Corbett said that Globalgreyhounds aims to have a live chatroom on the site in the next few weeks and months, in order to improve the platform for discussion.
The site has received a positive response from people who had previously found it difficult to navigate greyhound clubs on search engines.
"What's useful about Globalgreyhounds.com is that information from different countries all over the world is contained in the one site. Moderators from forums world-wide have brought all their members along to our site," Corbett said.
Globalgreyhounds says the new site is not in competition with bookmakers, but rather it hopes to work in conjunction with them.
