.it registries prove popular in Ireland

Irish company Digiweb is now offering companies the opportunity to register on
the Internet under the .it domain.



According to Digiweb, Italy's .it domain, because of its relevance to the IT
sector, has already proved popular with Irish companies and over 60 companies
registered for the top-level domain in the last week in August. 



Digiweb is the first Irish ISP to be approved by the Italian Domain registry to
register .it domains for Irish people, organisations or businesses.



"Most good dotcom names in the main domains are gone, so .it offers companies
the opportunity to register a catchy name for their company, especially those in
the IT industry," said Sheenagh Ross, business operations manager with Digiweb.




Unlike .com, or other generic domains which are frequently unavailable, the
availability of most .it domain names remains high, according to the company.
Digiweb also believes the domain registry will be of interest to companies
wishing to capture the .it version of their existing URLs. 



Ross said in the coming weeks the company is also planning to offer domains such
.tv, .sport and .tech. Digiweb, which provides a range of ISP services, can also
register companies for more common domains including .ie, .biz, .info, .com,
.net, .org, and .co.uk. 



The company has a customer base of between 1200 and 1500 and Ross said Digiweb
expects around 50 percent of these companies to avail of the .it domain. "We
are starting to expand the whole list of domains we offer and the response so far
to .it has been phenomenal," he said. The company said the registration process
can usually be completed within 24 hours. 



Digiweb said among those to avail of the new domain were Dublin-based computer
firm Strictly IT Ltd. (http://www.strictly.it), Web developers CSSL Ltd in Mayo
(http://www.cssl.it), and Roundstone Musical Instruments in Galway
(http://www.bodhran.it).
