Entertainment.ie launches SMS reminders
Wednesday, July 04 2001
by Rory Kelleher
A novel SMS service to remind people about TV programmes they want to see or gigs they want to go to has been set up by www.entertainment.ie.
If users want to be reminded about a film that is on in two weeks so they do not forget about it, they can receive an SMS to remind themselves when it is on. A user can choose when they receive the reminder, from an hour to twelve hours before the programme starts.
"We are looking to get 10,000 users a month using the service and there has been quite a lot of interest in it already," said Julian Douglas, managing director of the company. The service which was launched three weeks ago already has 5,000 users a week.
"This is exactly what people want from the Internet, technology that is simple to use and has a real purpose and usefulness," said Douglas.
The on-line service is free and does not require users to register or fill out any forms. Visitors simply click on a box next to their preferred programme or event and enter their phone number.
When a user returns to the site to use the SMS alerts the person's phone number is automatically filled in to speed up the process with the information being stored on a cookie on the person's PC.
Entertainment.ie is looking for a sponsor for the SMS service and the company said that any advertising could be accurately targeted. For example a sportswear manufacturer could choose to only sponsor SMSs that are going out to remind people about sports events.
The SMS alerts can be used for a range of events from films and sport to concerts and comedy shows.
Entertainment.ie derive the majority of its revenues from advertising and content and sees the SMS alerts as an added value service.
The company hopes it will encourage Web surfers to visit the site more often.
