Investors file class action suit against Vodafone in the US | Ireland's INEX broke the 100 mbps level of traffic for the first time this week

A class-action lawsuit has been filed in the US against mobile operator Vodafone on behalf of investors in the company. Law firm Cauley Geller Bowman & Coates announced that the suit was filed by purchasers of Vodafone Group publicly traded securities between 7 March 2001 and 28 May 2002. The complaint alleges that Vodafone and some of its officers and directors issued false and misleading statements concerning the health of its business during this period.

Auction Web site eBay says it has received the state approval necessary to complete its acquisition of PayPal, the on-line payment company. PayPal agreed in July to be acquired by eBay for USD1.5 billion in stock. In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, eBay said it had obtained all approvals needed under state money transmittal laws to complete the transaction, which must now be approved by PayPal's shareholders.

Twenty-six percent of mobile handsets worldwide will be made by contract manufacturers in 2002, according to a new report from Strategy Analytics. The study, titled "Contract Manufacturers' Path to 40 Percent Cellular Production Share," estimates that this figure will rise steadily to reach 38 percent in 2007. The research company said that Flextronics, currently the world's third-largest handset maker after Nokia and Motorola, is the world's largest contract handset manufacturer for 2002, with an estimated 42 percent market share this year.

The increasing adoption of broadband is likely to spark a growth in the portal market, according to Computer Associates (CA). The company has noticed an increase in the number of portal-based enquiries it receives, particularly in relation to the role of portals in teleworking. CA has launched a guide to building a successful portal that includes advice for businesses that are considering setting up a portal for home workers and the security issues raised by such a strategy.

Ireland's INEX (the Internet Neutral Exchange Association) has announced that its Internet exchange, which is used by companies to exchange Internet traffic, broke the 100 mbps level of traffic for the first time this week. INEX is an industry-owned association that provides high-speed switching facilities for its members, which include Esat Business, Eircom Net, HEAnet, Nevada tele.com, AT&T, Cable & Wireless and NTL Ireland. One hundred mbps of Internet traffic is the equivalent of transferring 6,000 e-mails every second.

Tornado Insider and HotOrigin are seeking Irish entrants for the Tornado Insider magazine's list of the top 100 emerging companies in the European IT and biotech sectors. The Tornado 100 Networking event, to be held on 24 October at Media Lab Europe in Dublin, will feature presentations from a selection of the top Irish candidates. Tech companies who wish to be considered for the list can enter on-line at www.tornado-insider.com. The final list will be appear in next summer's issue of Tornado Insider magazine.

Esat BT has launched an initiative aimed at giving peace of mind to large companies that are concerned about the viability of their international business network services. The initiative provides a back-up solution for companies if and when their primary network service provider experiences operational difficulties. The solution is available to organisations operating in Ireland and across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas.

Misys Healthcare Systems, a specialist in healthcare IT, has announced an agreement with the North Western Health Board in Ireland. The health board, which already uses the Misys Laboratory information system in its facilities, plans to implement Misys' CoPathPlus anatomic pathology system, Instrument Manager and Ad Hoc Report Writer. The health board aims to use the new technology to improve communication between its laboratory and the rest of the healthcare enterprise.

IT services company Logica and Sepro, a provider of rating and billing solutions, have teamed up to deliver a billing solution for investment bank Credit Suisse First Boston. The deal will see Logica implement and deliver Sepro's "e-Rate Billing" solution for Credit Suisse First Boston's Transaction Services and Solutions Business worldwide. The solution will enable Credit Suisse to introduce and bill integrated financial services to its client base.
