BT, the parent of Esat BT, is to run trials in the UK to test a new approach that could bring broadband ADSL technology to small exchanges not previously deemed commercially viable. It involves a local body, such as a local council, sponsoring the first six months of service, after which time, if BT deems it a success, it will continue to support ADSL at the exchange.
Nua has released the latest Global Internet Trends report on Net penetration. It shows that 10 percent of the world's population now has Internet access. Other findings show that Europe now has the most Internet users in the world. However, it also reports that the digital divide between first world and third world nations is as wide as ever.
TeleCity, the co-location and data centre services company, has signed an agreement with CryptAll, the Irish Internet security solutions company, for co-location services in its Dublin facility. TeleCity will provide CryptAll with rack space, power and bandwidth to enable it to deliver secure, encrypted e-mail and communications as a service through the Internet. "Outsourcing clearly continues to be a major growth area in the Irish IT industry," said Bob McClean, sales manager, TeleCity Ireland and European partner manager. TeleCity Ireland was established in July 2000 in Dublin.
Sabeo Technologies, the enterprise solution and service provider, has announced a new funding initiative of EUR350,000. This will be used to double employment over the next two years. The funding was led by Brian Long, CEO and co-founder of Parthus Technologies plc. Sabeo, which started in late 2000, said it achieved sales of EUR6.3 million in its first year of business. Customers currently include AIB plc, AIB Capital Markets, Bank of Ireland, Vodafone Ireland, Eurocommerce Internet Solutions, the Department of Agriculture and Food, the Department of Defence, Cognotec, FAS and VHI.
Peribit Networks has announced the next generation of its Molecular Sequence Reduction technology. The company said that using concepts from the field of biology, its DNA sequencing based technology provides instant, wide area network capacity gains of up to 10 times by eliminating transmission of repeated data patterns over the network. Peribit claims it can now prioritise traffic by application through the network. The company also claims to have increased reduction rates on all traffic, and significantly on voice over IP.
Goldman Sachs analyst Rich Sherlund says lacklustre economic growth anticipated during 2003 will most likely reduce revenues in the software sector. In Sherlund's research note he said longer-term growth rates for technology companies probably have to be reduced because of the slow drop in information technology spending. He added that spending for 2002 will likely be about flat with last year and 2003 will probably see only 3 percent to 5 percent growth.
