Hutchison Whampoa may acquire Meteor | Deutsche Telekom staff strike over pay

Speculation is growing that Hutchison Whampoa will acquire Ireland's smallest mobile operator, Meteor. John Kelly, head of research at consultancy firm Alatto Technologies, said he would "not be surprised" if Meteor were acquired by Hutchison. However, a spokesperson for Hutchison told Business & Finance that he could not comment on the "rumour and speculation" that has followed the announcement that Hutchison has been awarded the A licence for the provision of 3G services in Ireland.

Dublin-based Spectel, a provider of integrated conferencing solutions, has released an entry-level instant conferencing solution for SMEs. The Spectel MeetingManager platform provides small-to-medium size businesses with in-house voice conferencing for up to 60 concurrent participants. The platform is a fully-automated, plug-and-play solution that works with a business's existing phone system and supports global telephone system standards.

Vodafone Sweden and Anoto have won a Bluetooth Congress Award for their demonstration of new revenue opportunities for operators through Bluetooth messaging. Other companies who were commended for their efforts to bring practical Bluetooth applications to market were Rococo Software, 3Com, Inventel and Toshiba. The awards were presented at the Bluetooth Congress in Amsterdam.

NewWorldIQ, a provider of marketing automation solutions, has unveiled CampaignIQ 2.0, a personalised e-mail engine for marketers aiming to create relationships with prospects and enhance customer retention. CampaignIQ 2.0 is available as an application running on enterprise servers, offering integration opportunities with existing legacy, CRM, and sales force automation systems. The solution provides detailed on-line campaign reporting, has the ability to segment and use customer data for intelligent messaging, and accelerates the use of on-line marketing best practices.

About 2,000 staff at German telecoms giant Deutsche Telekom are striking over pay. The warning strikes, which will continue in the next few days, will take place in the states of Bavaria, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Wuerttemberg, as well as in the northern city of Lubeck, the union Ver.di said in a statement. Ver.di has already dismissed Telekom's offer from the last round of talks, which proposed a wage increase of 3.8 percent. A fourth round of wage talks between the union and Telekom representatives is set for Thursday, at which the union will demand a 6.5 percent wage hike.

Nokia is to expand mobile operator Radiolinja's GSM and 3G networks in Finland. Nokia has signed a multi-year agreement with Radiolinja Origo, the network operator of Radiolinja, for the supply of network equipment to Radiolinja's second and third generation mobile networks. The agreement includes services such as project management and implementation, as well as integration and maintenance services in the live network environment.

The largest virtual switchboard in Norway has been created for telecoms group Telenor using digital signal processing (DSP) resources from Aculab, combined with speech recognition software from Nuance. The new Talk2Call speech recognition platform, developed by Unisys, is a business-to-business solution available to subscribers to Telenor's VIP Nett service. The service enables a "virtual receptionist" to recognise names when spoken and to route calls to the appropriate person within an organisation.

Microsoft has announced that it will launch its Tablet PC in November and its Pocket PC operating system for mobile telephones in the United States in the summer. Microsoft has been showcasing its Tablet PCs, which allow users to take notes on touchscreens, at industry events for the past two years. Its Pocket PC OS, slimmed-down software that is designed to run on handheld devices, manages contacts and scheduling and offers limited access to e-mail.
