Qumas appoints chief marketing officer | Sky appoints Irish director

Qumas Ltd., a provider of enterprise compliance management solutions for regulated industries, has appointed Valarie King-Bailey to the newly created position of chief marketing officer. Previously, King-Bailey served as vice president of global marketing for the firm. Before joining Qumas, she served as a senior manager with Abbott Laboratories and prior to that Intergraph Corporation.

Alphyra has appointed Nick Koumarianos, the former managing director of Cable & Wireless Ireland, a non-executive director. Koumarianos previously sat on the board of C&W's European subsidiaries and then became managing director of its Caribbean and Latin American operations. Following his retirement from Cable & Wireless, Koumarianos has taken up a number of advisory positions within Irish companies at the request of venture capitalists, included amongst these are chairman of Soft-ex and Microsol. He has also joined the board of Xnet and is now a shareholder in that company. He is a member of the approvals board of ICC Venture Capital.

Vivendi Universal announced that Bernard Spitz, senior vice president in charge of Economics and corporate studies, has been promoted to the additional position of head of strategy for Europe for Vivendi Universal, effective immediately. Spitz will continue to be based in Paris. As head of strategy for Europe, he will be responsible for identifying and pursuing strategic opportunities in Europe for the parent company, Vivendi Universal. He joined the company in February 2001 in the position of senior vice president, corporate & economic studies at the finance department of Vivendi Universal.

Sky has appointed Mark Deering to the newly-created post of director, Ireland. Deering will take up the post at the company's Dublin office on 18 February 2002. His responsibilities will include sales, commercial, regulatory and other matters.

Yahoo announced that Jeff Mallett will step down as president and chief operating officer in April. Mallett will continue working with the management and operations teams to execute the company strategy, as well as facilitate a smooth transition. He will also continue as a member of the board of directors until the company's annual stockholder meeting this spring. Mallett joined Yahoo in 1995 as the company's twelfth employee. He was instrumental in engineering the company's original business plan, including establishing the Yahoo network. He has also been integral to the company's diversification into enterprise solutions, business and consumer for-pay services and electronic commerce transactions. The company expects to outline a succession plan prior to Mallett's departure in April.

Oftel has appointed Peter Waller as its new director of operations. He succeeds Anne Lambert who is returning to the DTI after three years at Oftel. He joins Oftel from the department of trade and industry where he is currently the deputy chief executive of the small business service and will take up his new post on 21 January.

AOL Time Warner announced the appointment of Theodore W. Ullyot as senior vice president and general counsel for AOL Time Warner Europe. Ullyot will be based in London and New York and will work closely with the general counsels of the various AOL Time Warner divisions. He joined the America Online legal department in October 2000, and transferred to AOL Time Warner following the completion of the merger in January 2001. Prior to joining Ullyot was a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Kirkland & Ellis.
