The Business Software Alliance (BSA), a watchdog group representing leading software makers, has taken strong action against Internet Service Providers (ISPs) who do not quickly remove allegedly illegal material on their sites, pursuant to rules established in the EU's 2000 "E-Commerce" Directive. After legal action taken by BSA, Jippii Group, the second largest Internet and Telecoms Service Provider in Finland, agreed to remove serial numbers and other materials which can be used to infringe the copyrights of software companies from Web pages on its server, the BSA said on Wednesday.
BT has formed a partnership with Marconi to launch the world's largest public network of multimedia terminals in payphones. BT Payphones, part of the Consumer Division of BT Retail, will install 28,000 new terminals to be built by Marconi and which will offer full Internet access, e-mail and text messaging. Rollout will begin in April 2002 with 3,000 terminals expected to be in place within a year. Under the terms of the agreement Marconi is investing in the terminals while BT will be managing the network, providing content and offering sales and marketing support. Revenue from the new units will be shared by BT and Marconi with BT's revenues expected to be STG50 million by 2004/05.
Charlie McCreevy, T.D., Minister for Finance launched the Irish Public Sector Procurement Portal, www.etenders.gov.ie, on Wednesday. The e-tenders Web site is a central facility where Public Sector Procurement advertisements and tenders can be accessed.
Infonet Services, a provider of global communications services for multinationals, has been awarded a five-year multi-service contract by Nestle S.A. of Switzerland, to build and maintain their global communications network. Under the terms of this agreement, Infonet's expected revenue will be in excess of USD125 million over the initial five-year term of the contract. This network implementation rollout will link 1,500 Nestle locations worldwide within 90 countries.
On-line purchasing continues to grow in the US and remains far ahead of key European markets, according to Accenture's third-annual Chirstmas eFullfillment survey. In fact, European e-tailers are at roughly the same level of performance as US sites were in 1999. In Europe, consumer on-line buying faces some very different challenges than in the US. Language and country barriers have a big affect on which companies consumers can shop and how easy it is to place an order and actually receive it. The reality is there are very few pan-European sites.

The reinstatement follows Nasdaq's emergency moratorium on the enforcement of the minimum bid price and market value of public float requirements, which is scheduled to expire on 02 January 2002. This temporary relief was granted in response to the 11 September tragedy, to allow companies to focus on running their businesses, rather than on meeting these two listing requirements.
Oracle Corporation announced that as part of the STG325 million contract that has been awarded to the McKesson consortium by the UK Department of Health, it will provide the UK National Health Service (NHS) with a multi-million pound implementation of its Web-enabled human resources management system (HRMS) software.
NetValue released its first report which includes information on Internet access at work and the Buying Power Index, which measures on-line purchasing power of Internet visitors. The research company found that a quarter of the UK workforce is connected to the Internet, with 7.8 million people having access and regularly using the Internet at work. 14.75 million British people have home Internet access currently. NetValue also reports that people spend more time on certain Web sites at work than at home. On-line visitors to Tesco, Egg and Lloyds TSB spend much more time on those sites at work than at home. Britain's high street shops have been attracting the most business, as nine of the top ten Web sites with the highest BPI belong to established retail brands. WH Smiths, Argos, Comet, Currys, Littlewoods and Woolworths lead the index. buy.com and qvcuk.com were the only pure-play Internet retailers to make the top ten.
