Managing Director James Kennedy said on Thursday that SmartNote will sell Web enabled software that will automatically forward text messages to remind users of appointments. SmartNote also provides a service to let users send text messages by e-mail.
Kennedy believes that professionals such as solicitors, auctioneers, and particularly doctors would benefit from the SMS reminder service, noting that General Practitioners in Ireland lose some IEP150 million a year because patients don't turn up for their appointments.
On average Irish patients miss 10 percent of their appointments, he said. If this figure could be brought down, a better health service could be provided, according to Kennedy. He claimed that sending out reminders could cut the number of missed appointments by up to 50 percent.
Clients using the SmartNote service will get a username and a password to log on to the system. They will see a calendar that they can fill with appointments, and after that reminders will be forwarded automatically.
"In the future people don't even have to go on-line to make the system work," Kennedy added. "We are working on a reminder service that will be part of their Microsoft Outlook e-mail account."
Clients can compose their own reminders, but they can also use templates.
The reminder service costs IEP500 a year and the service that sends text messages to mobile phones from an e-mail account costs IEP79 annually.
Competitors in the reminder services market include Slipstick.com, which provides an advanced reminders service, and a similar service to send SMS-messages by e-mail is provided by the Dutch company ESMS (www.esms.nu).
SmartNote was founded a year ago and is privately funded by a number of investors.
