Wireless infrastructure company Rococo Software raises USD2.8 million | IDC predicts boom in e-learning market

Rococo Software has raised USD2.8 million from Trinity Venture Capital and has appointed two key members to its Board of Directors. The company builds innovative wireless infrastructure for Bluetooth applications, enabling a variety of mobile devices including mobile phones, laptops and PDAs to communicate in a wireless network.

An appeals court has refused to reconsider its decision that Microsoft illegally bundled its Windows operating system and Internet browser. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia denied Microsoft's request, clearing the way for the case to be sent back to a lower court to decide Microsoft's penalty for being an illegal monopoly.

Fujitsu Siemens Computers announced that it has been awarded a EUR6.5 million contract to provide Lufthansa with their Lifebooks (FSC Laptops) for use in their cockpits. The 3.500 Lifebook systems will be used for time efficient calculation of the propulsive force before take off and for the provision of electronic library, flight preparation and training modules.

IDC estimates that the European e-learning market will grow by 126 percent in 2001, to reach almost USD6 billion by 2005, representing around a quarter of the total IT training market. Content will continue to be the dominant segment of the market while services will be the second-largest segment and will have the highest growth. Delivery solutions represent a decreasing proportion over time, as customers will require more course development, administration and maintenance, which will boost the content and services segments. IT training revenues in Europe will reach USD7.7 million in 2001. During the period 2000 to 2005, this market is expected to grow at a robust compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10 percent and by 2005 is expected to reach USD11.3 million.

Etain Doyle, Telecoms Regulator has issued a set of short technology briefing notes describing some emerging and evolving technologies that may help develop Ireland's infocom sector. Telephony, e-mail and Web browsing are still mainly delivered over communications networks designed for voice and low speed data communications. Newer broadband applications currently under development require communications infrastructure that is capable of handling data rates that are much quicker. An emerging technology known as optical wireless could prove to be a cost effective and timely networking solution for some users requiring broadband access. Another new technology called High Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS) also offers an alternative method of delivering broadband services in the medium term.

Microsoft has released the enterprise, evaluation and developer editions of Microsoft Content Management Server 2001, a Web content management system that enables businesses to quickly and efficiently build, deploy and maintain highly dynamic Internet, intranet and extranet Web sites and is the latest addition to the Microsoft .NET Enterprise Server family.

Alcatel's 7300 Advanced Services Access Manager (ASAM) has strengthened its dominant position in the market for digital subscriber line access multiplexers (DSLAMs) according to figures recently released by industry analysts Dell'Oro Group. The Group reports that Alcatel's 7300 ASAM achieved a share of more than 60 percent in the global market for DSLAM units during the first quarter of 2001. This is more than ten times the share of its nearest competitor. Alcatel has now shipped over 10 million ADSL ports worldwide.

The Biometric Digest newsletter announced introduction of its Biometric Information Directory (BID). Biometric technology identifies individuals based on their fingerprint, iris recognition, facial scan, voice, signature and other personal characteristics. The directory lists more than 330 biometric vendors, integrators, consultants, trade associations and publications. It also contains a list of more than 40 publicly held companies offering a range of biometric products and services.

Nielsen//NetRatings site traffic figures have confirmed StepStone's position as Europe's leading on-line career portal. In June, StepStone recorded 854,256 unique visitors; its nearest rival logged 191,965 unique visitors.

Reuters has established a new financial software facility in Bangkok to maintain and enhance a number of its financial products. The new unit will take over responsibility for the day-to-day support of a broad range of real-time financial applications for market data display, order-routing, transactional systems, market information servers and multi-language news processors.

The SmartForce e-Learning Foundation is to donate 500 scholarships for access to e-Learning to the Magic Johnson Foundation at the Grand Opening of Ujima Village's Magic Johnson Technology Centre in Los Angeles on August 3rd. The Magic Johnson Foundation is a non-profit organisation that supports community-based projects and serves the underserved sections of the community.

Instant messaging is seen as a workplace tool, not a distraction, according to a new survey from InsightExpress. The survey found that 20 percent of instant messaging occurs at the workplace and is used to get the job done, not talk to "buddies." Of the 300 consumers questioned the survey found that 47 percent of them said that they use instant messaging. Of those, 96 percent said they use IM at home and 20 percent use instant messaging at work. Of those workers who use instant messaging at the office, 39 percent said it helps improve their job productivity. Additionally, nearly half of all respondents (49 percent) use instant messaging as a replacement for a telephone call while over one third (35 percent) use it in place of sending an e-mail.
