The directors of Abbey Computer Centre, an Antrim-based computer maker and retailer that failed in 2000 with debts of over STG197,493, have agreed not to hold directorships or to take any part in company management for between three and seven years. The undertakings given by Henry Crowe, Mark Allison and John Carson prevent them from being directors of a company or, in any way, whether directly or indirectly, being concerned in or taking part in the promotion, formation or management of a company for three to seven years.
An on-line business directory featuring over 130,000 businesses across Ireland has been launched. Today's Pages, aimed at business owners and professional managers, provides a facility to search for buyers, identify suppliers and research companies. The directory will also be available on a number of Irish Web sites, including ThePost.ie and IrishNews.com.
Eontec, a specialist in the development and delivery of Enterprise Java Banking solutions, has implemented its Lending Module at UK-based Yorkshire Building Society. The transactional Web site, based on J2EE Financial Components, enables the building society's customers to undertake mortgage application processing on-line.
The European Commission is calling a public hearing on the unbundling of the local loop (ULL), that is, access to the last mile of telephone lines into European homes. The public meeting, which will take place in Brussels on 08 July, is to facilitate analysis of the remaining difficulties in the implementation of LLU and the progress of competition in the provision of broadband access and services. The EC's Competition Directorate-General will present its findings in the second phase of its local loop sector enquiry. The industry will be asked to share their experiences and express their views on how to render effective ULL. Those interested in participating in the hearing should e-mail the EC at by 15 June, including contact details and with "invitation" as the subject heading.
High-tech industry giants are in the process of forming an alliance to simplify how mobile phones can be used on any network to play games, share photos or trade instant messages. Nearly 200 companies are set to unveil plans to form a new global organisation to develop open standards for phones and other wireless devices to operate seamlessly together. High-profile members of the alliance include Nokia, Microsoft, Intel, Vodafone and Walt Disney.
Motorola, the No. 2 maker of wireless telephones, said it will meet or beat its guidance for the second quarter and that it remains on track to return to profitability in the third quarter and show a profit for the full year. Motorola president and chief operating officer Edward Breen told investors at a Bear Stearns conference that growth is returning to the company's businesses and it expects to meet or beat its April guidance for the second quarter of a per-share loss of USD0.04 a share on revenues of at least USD6.4 billion.
Telecoms equipment maker Ericsson, said it was selling its chip unit to Germany's Infineon in a EUR400 million deal, but its shares fell on disappointment that payment was in stock not cash. Telefon AB LM Ericsson said it would receive EUR400 million (USD377 million) worth of Infineon Technologies AG stock in return for Ericsson Microelectronics when the transaction is completed in the summer, pending regulatory approvals. On Wednesday, the news pushed Ericsson shares more than 10 percent lower, before it recovered a little to trade 7.1 percent weaker.
Oracle has unveiled a Chinese version of its on-line resource centre, in an effort to attract application developers in the country. The new Oracle Technology Network (OTN) Web site aims to provide free downloads of Oracle development tools and software, technology documentation and support services to developers in the country. Rene Bonvanie, vice president of Oracle9i marketing and OTN, said he expects the new version of the site to sign up 165,000 developers in China, in addition to the existing 55,000 users from China who use the English version.
There has been a marked increase in monthly Internet sessions and time spent on-line around the world, according to a report by Nielsen//NetRatings. A comparison of global Internet usage between April 2001 and April 2002 showed that time spent on-line per month increased almost 13 percent, and the number of sessions per month increased nearly 9 percent across 21 countries. Worldwide, the number of active home users of the Internet grew nearly 18 percent year-on-year.
