Launched at the Ormonde Cinema, Stillorgan, Dublin, the service is to be rolled out nationwide.
Developed by the Irish m-commerce software developer Itsmobile in association with Eircell, the facility is the first of its kind for Irish movie-goers. Customers can also access the service through their PCs.
Digifone on-line (Dol) operates a similar service in association with Ticketmaster for concerts, sports and theatre events. Dol subscribers can also book and purchase tickets via their PCs.
But the Ormonde Cinema service is the first of its kind in Ireland dedicated to cinema tickets. Access to the new facility is through Eircell's e-merge WAP portal and the Ormonde Cinema's own Web site (http://www.ormondecinemas.com).
This is likely to be the first WAP e-commerce application to generate volume business. It is estimated that 60 percent of Irish cinema-goers are between the ages of 15 and 24 and, while a high proportion does not own credit cards, a growing number has WAP phones.
"This launch is only the beginning for Itsmobile," said Itsmobile director Kieran McCrea. "Our enabling technology will be rolled out into cinemas right across Ireland and into other European countries over the coming months along with different technologies which we are currently developing for a wide range of commercial applications."
"Itsmobile has plans which will revolutionise the way cinemas do business," said Ormonde Cinemas managing director Andrew O'Gorman. "We are delighted to be the first to the market with this innovative new technology."
