The Irish Internet Association has announced that John Pierce, the marketing director of Fujitsu company ICL, will be its new chairman.
Pierce succeeds Andrew O'Shaughnessy of E-Search who was the previous chairman of the Irish Internet Association. Jan Bosch, formerly of Band-x, is the IIA's departing vice chairman.
Along with the appointment of Pierce, the IIA announced that five new members were nominated after an e-vote to the 2002 IIA board. The new board members include Irene Gahan of Web Intellect, Michael Higgins from MissionMaker, Fergus O'Hehir of BWG Foods Ltd., Rory Power from Enterprise Ireland and Professor Marie Redmond of X Communications.
The new members will complement the existing board which includes Internet consultant Ciara Lawlor, Gary Morrissey of Assurelink, Frank Murray of Ecat, John O'Shea formerly of Webfactory, John Prendergast of PulseLearning and Patrick A. Tully of Irish Continental Group plc.
Moreover the IIA announced that a number of existing board members have been appointed to variety of positions within the organisation. John Prendergast has become the board's vice chairman and John O'Shea is the IIA's latest treasurer. Patrick Tully is the new honorary secretary.
Board members serve a term of up to three years, with the possibility for a fourth year for officers.
"The IIA has gone from strength to strength since its inception, and matured with the industry," Pierce said following his appointment. "Its function is to provide services to its members, and we have a well-developed plan to do this. I expect the year ahead to present exciting opportunities in terms of implementing the plan, and I look forward to the challenges," he added.
The Irish Internet Association's general membership now approaches 1,000 representatives. It is a professional body for those implementing the Internet as a medium for business and is headquartered in Dublin. However, the organisation has a presence in the South (Cork), the South East, the South West (Limerick), the West (Galway) and also in Northern Ireland (Belfast).
Over the last few years the Irish Internet Association has raised its profile significantly from its establishment in 1997. Some recent notable moves for the body include its merger with the Electronic Commerce Association of Ireland in the spring of 2001 and the appointment of its new chief executive, Colm Reilly, to Ireland's new Information Society Commission. Reilly was appointed as chief executive of the Irish Internet Association in June 2001.
