Bookmaker Ladbrokes is to team up with Sports.com for the geolocation of Web site visitors.

The UK-based companies have integrated the GeoPoint Country module into their Web sites, which will enable them to serve customised content tailored to the geography of each visitor. The Web sites can identify the geographic location of their visitors in real time.

"Quova GeoPoint will enable us to avoid taking bets from those countries which we choose not to accept bets from whether for legal or other reasons," John O'Reilly, managing director of Ladbrokes eGaming said. "It will also allow us to measure the continuing success of our on-line business on a country by country basis."

Sports.com stressed the importance of offering users information about athletes and sports teams they care about in a language they understand.

In June, research from independent market analysts, Datamonitor, predicted that combined revenues from both on-line and iTV gambling in Europe and the US will grow from an estimated USD6.7 in 2001 to USD20.8 billion in 2005. The company believes that the number of on-line gamblers in Europe and the US will grow from 2.9 million in 2001 to 7.4 million in 2005.

According to Datamonitor the UK has spearheading the growth of on-line gambling. The research also showed that many European consumers have started to gamble on sites that appeal to them with country-specific offerings, which is good news for the new Quova service.

In addition to this, the entry of established, traditional bookmakers such as Ladbrokes, into the on-line market has, according to the research, lent credibility to the on-line gaming industry.

In May, Strategy Analytics predicted that the amount of users of mobile gambling will have reached 100 million worldwide by 2006.

Betting in Ireland has been successfully marching towards the Internet in previous months with the launch of on-line services such as paddypower.com in June 2000 and netbetireland.com in April of the same year.

Paddypower.com announced a turnover of EUR8.5 million in that year. However in February the company told ElectricNews.Net that its willingness and ability remain under its current tax burdens in Ireland was limited.

Quova was founded in January 2000, and provides Internet infrastructure intelligence services to e-businesses.

Over 170,000 registered customers bet on the Internet with Ladbrokes at www.ladbrokes.co.uk.

Sports.com is an Internet and mobile data provider of sports content, community, commerce and betting.
