Microsoft to enter games console market

In a sign of the growing scale of the games industry, Microsoft has announced it will launch the "X-Box" games console in 2001. |
Using a custom designed graphics chip, the box will have movie-quality rendering; Microsoft claims the system will have 300 million polygons per second performance, three times faster than existing games consoles. It will also have Internet connectivity. "X-Box will offer game developers a powerful platform and game enthusiasts an incredible experience," said Bill Gates, who now holds the title of chief software architect at Microsoft following his resignation as CEO. "We want it to be the platform of choice for the best and most creative game developers in the world."
