Genie, the BT owned mobile Internet company, recorded 88 million WAP page impressions in the UK in the month of January, it has announced.
The company also said it was confident of further increases in business in the months ahead, signalling that the lacklustre reputation for WAP as a low-speed disappointment could be somewhat undeserved.
In its latest report, the company said that in the UK alone, a total of 88 million WAP page impressions were recorded in January, compared to 62.5 million at the end of December, an increase of more than 40 percent in one month.
Over the same period, registrations on the UK site have increased by 10 per cent to more than 1.85 million.
In addition, the average number of WAP pages viewed per session in the UK has increased to 11.8 while time spent by users within the Genie WAP portal per session has risen to 3.5 minutes.
"The monthly traffic and usage increases we are recording are extremely encouraging. They not only demonstrate an increase trend in use of Genie's wireless information services, but also indicate that users are spending more time on the site and accessing a wider amount of content," said Genie UK Managing Director, Laurence Alexander.
Globally fixed traffic in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and Spain now stands at 34.2 million page impressions with 1.8 million unique visitors recorded in January.
Genie is the mobile Internet division of Btopenworld, BT's mass market Internet business, and delivers content via its Web portals to fixed and mobile devices around the world.
The company currently has Web and WAP portals in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain and Italy along with WAP portals in Hong Kong and Malaysia.
Genie has more than 2.6 million registrations and offers content such as breaking sports results from Excite Sport, news from Guardian Unlimited.com and stock quotes from T.D. Waterhouse.
