Qwest Communications received subpoena for Global Crossing documents | SmartForce launches training solution for sales staff

Qwest Communications International announced on Monday that it has received a subpoena for documents concerning Global Crossing Ltd. from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in connection with the SEC's investigation of Global Crossing. The company said it would cooperate fully with the SEC.

ICL, the IT and e-business services company, has signed a three year agreement worth EUR17 million with the Department of the Environment and Local Government (DOELG) to refurbish and manage the IT infrastructure in motor taxation offices around the country. ICL is providing clustered Sun Microsystems Enterprise 6500 servers to power this initiative which will allow vehicle owners to tax their car from any one of Ireland's 40 motor taxation offices. All vehicle and driver licensing data will be held in an up-to-date national database on a central system in Shannon.

Saadian Technologies, a developer of custom software solutions in the Internet and mobile space, announced that Bewley's Hotels have gone live with its Business2Mobile (B2M) text messaging WebService. B2M allows Bewley's to use any PC keyboard to send text messages to one or more mobile phone numbers at a cost of only IEP.07 per message. Bewley's uses the service to confirm bookings and general reservation information. However, it also has plans to use the service as a marketing tool for regular guests.

New research by Oftel shows that more than a third of businesses using the Internet favour unmetered packages. In a study looking at business use of the Internet carried out in November 2001, the UK watchdog found that 63 percent of UK businesses are connected to the Web, with 36 percent of them using unmetered packages. Three-quarters of businesses (76 percent) use ordinary phone line dial-up access. Small companies (78 percent) favour dial-up access compared with 37 percent of medium-sized firms, with the latter more likely to favour ISDN (43 percent) or leased lines (19 percent). Around five percent of SMEs connect to the Web using DSL or cable modems. On average, UK businesses are spending around STG74 a month on Internet subscriptions, with those using dial-up access paying an average of STG25 and those favouring broadband access paying an average of STG102.

According to the latest research by Dataquest, the Latin American PC market grew 8 percent in 2001 with PC shipments surpassing 7.4 million units. PC revenue totalled USD7.35 billion in 2001, a 3.2 percent decline from 2000. In the fourth quarter of 2001, shipments declined 4.5 percent in Latin America, but the region received a slight boost from Mexico, which grew 6.6 percent from the fourth quarter of 2000.

Qualtrace, the Cork-based quality and risk management company, has opened a new, 15,700 square foot headquarters in the Cork Business & Technology Park, Model Farm Road, Cork.

Logica has been selected by Alstom to participate in the development of the European Rail Traffic Management System and set a standard signalling system for high-speed train lines. The European Commission mandated that the European member states implement a common signalling system for the high-speed train lines, the aim of which is for trains to be able to drive in different countries without switching signalling systems at the border. Under the agreement with Alstom, Logica will develop technical specifications and systems architecture for the trackside peripherals within the control centres, develop and integrate the applications, procure and deploy the ICT infrastructure and provide support for the solution.

Dell on Monday announced CompleteCare, an optional three-year accidental damage cover policy that is available for Dell Latitude and Inspiron notebooks and Dell Precision mobile workstations. In the event of accidental damage, CompleteCare, underwritten by London General Insurance, provides a repair or replacement notebook.

Whitehall House Senior College has become the top testing centre for MOUS certification in Europe in December 2001. Now a Microsoft IQ Centre, the college offers the Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) Program to both day and evening students.

SmartForce on Monday announced the launch of its Virtual Sales University (VSU) SolutionSet for the development of sales professionals. Available in the first quarter of 2002, the VSU SolutionSet is targeted toward helping companies to drive business growth and competitive advantage through greater sales force productivity.

The Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution Group (PTD) is electrifying a hundred villages in Gabon in a EUR20 million project ordered by the state energy ministry and scheduled for completion by the end of 2003. Under this program, Siemens is installing decentralised power supply systems. These systems have been developed to provide power for medical stations, village schools, homes and street lighting. Siemens PTD is working with numerous small local companies in its role as system integrator.
