Eircom has announced the launch of its ADSL service, Eircom i-stream, with monthly fees for a single connection starting at EUR99.
The new service, offering high-speed Internet access for a connection fee plus a flat monthly fee, will be targeted initially at heavy business and private Internet users. There will be four types of service offered: i-stream solo, i-stream multi, i-stream plus and i-stream enhanced.
Eircom i-stream solo is designed for single users with a single computer, said a spokesperson for the company. Meanwhile, i-stream multi is designed for up to four users with four computers being used over a single line and I-stream plus is also designed for up to four users, but offers better downloading.
The fourth option, i-stream enhanced, is designed for multiple users with multiple computers, and would therefore be most suited to small and medium-sized businesses, said the spokesperson.
A connection fee of EUR125 (IEP98.45) will apply to each type of service. In addition, users will pay a monthly fee for i-stream: EUR99 (IEP77.97) for i-stream solo; EUR140 (IEP110.26) for i-stream multi, EUR165 (IEP129.95) for i-stream plus and EUR228 (IEP179.57) for i-stream enhanced.
Customers will need to have their lines pre-tested to determine whether i-stream is available in their area. Eircom has set up an information line at .
Eircom will provide Alcatel or Zyxel DSL modems to i-stream customers, and will recommend a suitable router product for customers wishing to avail of the i-stream enhanced service.
The project represents a capital investment of IEP125 million over five years by Eircom.
At launch the new service will be available in 70 percent of the Dublin City area, or around 277,000 customers, explained the spokesperson. Thereafter, the service will be extended to the Greater Dublin area, Galway, Limerick and Cork by June 2002, and it will be available in the northwest, the northeast, the midlands and the southeast by December 2002.
ADSL technology will increase the speed of Internet access for customers by up to 30 times that of standard telephone lines, according to Eircom.
The service will bring high bandwidth information over ordinary copper telephone lines, and it will eliminate the need for customers to connect to, and disconnect from, the Internet.
In addition, since ADSL operates on the same line as the telephone, users will be able to access the Internet and use the telephone simultaneously.
