British Sky Broadcasting Group Plc reported its first profit in three years as the Rupert Murdoch controlled company gained thousands of new subscribers.
The firm's net profit was STG1.7 million, or a penny a share, in the period ending 30 June 2002, compared with a loss of STG165.6 million, or STG0.09, in the year-ago period. The company said fourth-quarter revenue was up by around 18 percent to STG747.9 million. More significantly, however, Sky gained 214,000 digital subscribers in the quarter, compared with forecasts of around 160,000 from analysts.
For the full year, the media company posted a net loss of STG1.38 billion, compared with a loss of STG538.6 million in fiscal 2001, as it wrote off its stake in a unit of German media company Kirch Holding GmbH by STG971.4 million.
