Manx Telecom is deploying Trintech's PayWare eHost secure payment gateway for its new e-commerce initiative.

The PayWare solution is to become part of Manx Telecom's new ManxNet e-Pay solution, which allows customers to enter their payment details into a secure Web site that links with a designated bank.

The e-commerce initiative is intended to promote the Isle of Man as an e-Island, according to Alaistar Elliott, e-business product manager for Manx Telecom.

The company was unable to disclose the value of the agreement, but it did say the overall initiative would involve a number of Isle of Man companies investing in different e-commerce technologies.

Specifically, PayWare will allow Manx Telecom to process and facilitate payments electronically, explained Elliott. Through its use of PayWare, Manx Telecom will effectively be collaborating with Trintech as a partner, he said.

Although there are a number of e-payment solutions available, PayWare is very flexible and will allow Manx Telecom to adapt electronic payment to the specific needs for individual customers, he added.

The e-payment solution is intended primarily for small business customers, explained Elliott. However, it would also be suitable for any dot.com company wishing to do business in the Isle of Man.

Customers availing of the electronic payment facility will be charged for doing so, thereby generating a new revenue stream for the company. However, no details were available as to the amount to be charged to customers, nor as to projected revenues from the new service.

John Harte, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Trintech, said that the deal gave the two companies the opportunity to collaborate on other new technologies such as m-commerce.

Meanwhile, Ralf Ohlhausen, director of business development for Manx Telecom, said that the new solution would allow his company to offer Internet payment authorisation to e-merchants anywhere in the world.

In a separate development on Monday, Manx Telecom announced the completion of its first data call over its third generation mobile network.

Mark Briers, director of Manx Telecom, said that the call has opened the door to the provision of some exciting applications in the company's suite of 3G services.

Following the data call, Manx Telecom expects to implement it 3G mobile network by early autumn 2001, according to a spokesperson.

Manx Telecom was formed in 1987 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of British Telecom. In June 1999, the company was awarded a UMTS license, and it currently holds licenses to run fixed and mobile networks on the Isle of Man.

Dublin-based Trintech provides secure electronic payment infrastructure solutions for card-based transactions for physical world commerce, e-commerce and mobile commerce.

In May Trintech, reported first quarter revenue growth of 93 percent to USD17 million. The strong Q1 results also showed software license revenue rising by 83 percent over last year to USD7.6 million.

Following the announcement of the deal Trintech shares jumped in Berlin 10.81 percent, trading at EUR2.05 on Tuesday at 1pm GMT.
